We are the projection of the perpetuated ideals of our parents, teachers, culture, religion, nation, and fears. Our view of nature is an aspect of the projection. It is programmable. Like a universal remote control, with the correct codes, our intended purpose can be fulfilled.
It is no more natural for me to walk under a tree rather than around it. However, one method can be more spiritually beneficial than the other.
There are many definitions for “spirit.” for the sake of this post, it means:
“The vital principle or animating force
within living things.”
Today is different from yesterday. Worries may be more prevalent. Problems more apparent. Memories can be harder to ignore. Life either is or is not. You either are or are not. Sometimes life may be all that you have. We may wallow in this if we want, but the best of us will scream from within, through pain and doubt, to remind us of who we are. At our best, we are jubilant, free, and nonchalant.
On our worst days, the sun and sky are still above. The hickory and oak wave and sing, breathe oxygen, and push their leaves toward the yellow sun. The soil swells with musty fervor, providing the playing field for billions of decomposers and spring flowers. The wind tickles the hairs on your nose as it carries the dreams and hopes of Gaia, and all seed bearing plants, across open fields. On our worst days, the mechanisms programmed within our vulnerable minds take hold and steer the course. An auto-pilot life is devoid of emotion. I know this well.
Step into some woody place. If it is small or surrounded by evidence of civilization, kneel, sit, or lay down. Submerge yourself in the life around. Open your eyes to the butterflies, squirrels, and the choir of life in front of you. Do not fear the earth, cobwebs, or insects. They all want to leave an impression on you, but nothing they can leave will last forever. Yet, the spirit they will evoke, that vital principle, will fill your lungs with peace and understanding. In a sanctuary of verdure your heart may swell and your mind may drift from the worst to the best of who you are.
We need consistency. We need to know, when everything seems to be upside down, that there are some things which will never change. Nature is that for me. My basic hope is that everyone may have a place of constant life and beauty. A place to retreat to and remember the best of who you are. If not, I invite you to join me in some woody place, wherever and whenever possible.
